Istanbul University, also known as University of Istanbul, is a public research university located in Istanbul, Turkey. Founded by Mehmed II on May 30, 1453, a day after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, it was reformed as the first Ottoman higher education institution influenced by European approaches.

Istanbul University is a state university based in Istanbul, founded in 1933. Its academic units include 17 faculties, and the ÖSYM guide lists 146 associate and bachelor programmes. In 2025-2026 it had 514,242 students; 50,245 graduated in 2024-2025 (YÖK).
